Alan qualified as a dental technician in 1978 and worked in Newcastle Dental Hospital where he became a senior technician. In 1985 he left the Dental Hospital and set up his own business in Wideopen. After five years, the original premises became too small and he moved to his current premises in Hazlerigg in 1991.
In the early days, Alan had a dental laboratory providing dentures for patients via Dental surgeons, who provided the impressions and prescription.
In 1993 Alan joined the Clinical Dental Technicians Association, who at the time were lobbying the Government and the General Dental Council to provide a pathway through parliament to allow Dental Technicians the opportunity to achieve the clinical knowledge required to work directly with the patients.
In 1994 Alan embarked on a study programme which lasted three years and culminated in a two week stay in Canada which included theory and a practical exam constructing dentures for patients. It was a further eight years before the GDC (General Dental Council) adopted the change recommended by the Nuffield report for patient’s to have access for the provision of complete dentures from someone other than a Dentist. Alan embarked on further studies for the next two years which culminated with Alan attending the Royal College of Surgeons (London) in March 2007 to take his exams and successfully qualified and he received his diploma from the College in July of the same year.
Alan was the first Clinical Dental Technician in the North East to register with the GDC in July 2007 and has created a very successful Denture Practice at Newcastle Denture Clinic, Hazlerigg, and also works as part of the clinical team at Guidepost Dental Practice providing complete, partial, and implant retained dentures, with satisfied clients referring friends and family and forwarding many thank you cards.
As a craftsman, it is his aim to provide you with the finest quality dentures. Part of Alan’s work is to listen to your requirements, look at your facial features, see how you smile and how your face looks in a relaxed position and with precision and attention to detail, construct the bespoke dentures that are perfectly adapted to your mouth and facial appearance.
Why not make an appointment for a free, no obligation consultation with Alan and see if he can give you the smile you deserve.
At Newcastle Denture Clinic and Guidepost Dental Practice I’m not happy till you are and my objective is that you arrive as a patient and leave as a friend!

When I first heard about ideal weight I must admit to being a little nervous, but my coach talked me though the process and helped me find the right plan for me. Initially I wanted to start on the 4 plan, but a medical condition meant that I needed to start on the 3 plan. This actually turned out for the best for me as I really enjoy being able to prepare and share a family meal every day, something I wouldn't have been able to do on the 4 plan. What I also love about the 3 plan is that I get to choose which meal I have, which is great. The support I have received so far has been great. My coach is really supportive and I genuinely look forward to our weekly meetings. I have also made some great friends from my group; many of us talk outside of the weekly sessions and are there to support each other. I don't mind admitting that I thought the coaching sessions would be a waste of time, even after I met my coach I still wasn't 100% convinced I would enjoy the sessions. Now, I have a totally different opinion on them. My coach is simply amazing and not only have I lost weight, but I have learnt so much about myself and I am happier and healthier and have a far more positive outlook on life. Anyone who is thinking like I did should just go along and see for themselves! I still have a little way to go until I reach my ideal weight but already feel like a new person. I have a wonderful family, a great group of friends and a job I enjoy, but I never realised until now how old I felt beyond my years. It feels crazy to say it now, but I genuinely thought I was ready for retirement. I am now making up for lost time. I feel so much active and have started to plan more and more things. It might sound a bit cliché, but I really do feel like I have been given a new lease of life and I am so glad that I made the decision to join Ideal Weight.
